Last thursday I shot with a model called Miss Blue Angel in the beautiful surrounds of Bovey Castle, it rained ALOT and we even used the umbrella in a few of the shots.
I brought both the nikon d90 and the nikon d300 and swapped them over for use of the different lenses to keep the sensors dry. I love the depth of field that the nikon 50mm lens gives especially when shooting against textured backgrounds with a close up headshot. See above.
The 50mm lens used with a low aperture, my usual choice is f1.8, gives beautiful bokeh (out of focus circles of light from backgrounds) see below. This gives a lovely depth in portrait images and can be used against leaves of a tree or in night shots with street lights in the background.
